What is Moodle?

Moodle—or modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment—is a free, open-source learning platform. It provides educators, administrators, and learners with a single, secure, and integrated system to create personalized learning environments. Moodle is used for blended learning, distance education, flipped classroom and other e-learning projects in schools, universities, and workplaces.

What does it look like?

Moodle has customizable management features that allow users to create private websites with online courses for educators and trainers to help achieve learning goals. It also allows users to extend and tailor learning environments using community-sourced plugins.

  • Moodle Grading Rubic
Select from advanced grading methods to tailor the gradebook to your course and examination criteria.
  • Moodle Multimedia Integration

Moodle’s built-in media support enables you to easily search for and insert video and audio files in your courses.

  • Moodle Mobile App
Moodle's responsive mobile app displays in portrait or landscape view, regardkess of screen resolution.

How does Moodle work with Watershed?

Watershed’s turnkey Moodle integration enables you to push data about learning activity across your Moodle account using xAPI so you can analyze all your learning data in one place and in one format. Out of the box, Moodle includes basic functionality that is extended by installing plugins.

The same is true for Moodle’s xAPI tracking, and there are three plugins you should install and configure to get started with xAPI in Moodle:

  1. the xAPI Launch Link,
  2. Logstore xAPI, and
  3. Watershed Plugin.
Once Moodle is connected to Watershed's learning record store and data is flowing in, you can start creating Watershed reports. Keep in mind, while Watershed integrates with your existing Moodle site, we don't sell Moodle services. Visit Moodle's website for a list of official Moodle partners.

What kind of reports will I have access to?

Use Watershed’s Activity Card to display data from Moodle quizzes and graded assignments to show how learners and groups did on a quiz, the effectiveness of quiz questions, and more. Cards that use measures—such as the Leaderboard card—are ideal for tracking other Moodle activities.
